São Paulo Futebol Clube
The youngest club among the greatest in Brazilian soccer, São Paulo Futebol Clube (São Paulo Soccer Club) was refounded in the 1935. From 1943, thanks to the famous soccer player Leônidas da Silva, the Club started winning titles and more space in the sports headlines. Despite facing financial difficulties in the early ‘50s, due to the beginning of works at Cícero Pompeu de Toledo stadium, São Paulo remained as a bothering club to their opponents and showed itself capable of revealing great players as Gino Orlando e Maurinho.
From 1960, Morumbi stadium was partially opened, in a victory by 1 to 0 against Sporting Lisboa. Due to the financial difficulties, the Club remained a few years without winning any titles, but later in the ‘70s they won the Paulista championship, right after the whole opening of the stadium. At this moment, Tricolor would begin its path of amazing conquests and would become a synonym for conquests, glories and titles.
Besides winning the Paulista championships in 1970, 1971 and 1975, São Paulo won its first Brazilian Championship in 1977 by beating Atlético Mineiro in the final game. The club strength can also be measured through the Brazilian vice-championships in 1971, 1973 and 1974 of Libertadores da América Cup.
The ‘80s were full of glory for the Tricolor fan. Besides of their great titles, there were also great teams that marked History. In this period, during the Brazilian bi championship in 1896, the team became known as Menudos of Morumbi through the coach Cilinho. Great players like Careca, Serginho Chulapa, Oscar, Waldir Peres, Muller, Dario Pereira and Zé Sérgio wore the Tricolor t-shirt. Besides the Brazilian bi championship, São Paulo won the Paulista championships in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989.
The glorious ‘80s set path to Tricolor’s golden age and it was led by the master Telê Santana. The period between 1991 and 1994 was marked by a lot of players like Raí, Palinha, Zetti, Cafu, among others. The Brazilian tri championship in 1991 and the achievements in Libertadores led the Club to another level within the global and national scene, providing a significant growth in the number of fans in Brazil and admirers around the world, mainly in Japan.
Besides the two continental titles, Tricolor has always defeated their European opponents in the world title matches. Barcelona and Milan were the first victims. Liverpool met São Paulo’s power 12 years later. The ‘90s were also remarkable due to conquests of Paulista in 1992, the Super Cup in 1993, the South American Re-cups in 1993 and 1994, the Conmebol Cup in 1994 and the Paulista in 1998.
From 2000 on, São Paulo would still keep appearing among the protagonists in the championships. After the victory in Rio-São Paulo tournament in 2001 and the Paulista Superchampionchip in 2002, São Paulo would be back in 2004 to contest the Libertadores da América Cup after 10 years of absence. They would firstly get to the semi finals and in 2005 they would conquer the América for the third time.
São Paulo Soccer Club has always been known as a pioneer club in infrastructure investments. The Club has a Athletes Formation Center in Cotia, and a training center in Barra Funda in São Paulo, both are considered a quality model. Besides soccer, the Club is prominent by its success in other sports. By defending the colours of São Paulo, Adhemar Ferreira da Silva got to the olympic gold and broke the world record twice in the triple jump and won two gold medals for Brazil. The boxer Éder Jofre, the Golden Rooster of 50 knockouts, emerged to rings that one day would be on his feet inside São Paulo Soccer Club.
Tricolor Paulista is a management model in the national sports and it’s been among the biggest revenues of Brazilian soccer for years and the São Paulo fans are the ones growing in numbers in Brazil.
